House Training Dogs ? Working With the Adult Rescue Dog

House training dogs is easier when you get to start them as puppies, as they are younger it is easier for them to learn. You have decided to do the humane thing and rescue an adult dog from the pound, you have come home and have just now realized that your new pet is not house trained as you discover a little present in the kitchen…now what. Never fear, it is possible to house train adult dogs.

As with house training puppies; this will require diligence, commitment, patience and a good nature. As with puppies, no punishment, this will only cause more problems in the future. If you catch you dog eliminating in the house, rush the dog outside, once they have finished going outside praise them. If the dog makes a mistake while you weren’t paying attention, clean up the mess and move on, there is no point is punishing the animal because you weren’t paying attention.

Don’t kid yourself, this will be a lot of work, every time your dog goes outside, you go with them so you can praise them at the right moment, remember, dogs live in the now you must praise them at the moment, not later when you let them back inside. As laborious as this will be it allows your canine to get an understanding of what you want and allows you to get a feel for their schedule.

As you can see, house training dogs is easier the younger they are, don’t let this dissuade you from adopting an adult dog that may not be trained. Just as with puppies, once trained they will follow the rules unless they have no other option. Remember, adult dogs need homes, families and love to.

Unexpected Benefits While Potty Training Dog

My new Christmas puppy was a wonderful surprise, what I didn’t expect were the many unwanted surprises that followed. I’ve had dogs all my life but always my mom and dad had done the heavy lifting of potty training the dog. I remember it wasn’t always pleasant to be around as dad tried to make the dog bend to his will. When he was at work mom usually worked things out with the dog so at the end of a couple of weeks dad could be proud of him self for potty training dog.

Living on my own I had this mixed view of what needed to be done with a new puppy and as I tried to apply it things weren’t going well. Being an internet child I searched and found some online dog training videos that included a section on potty training dog. It was great training that not only handled the situation at hand but had other, far reaching, benefits.

As you potty train your dog you will learn positive reinforcement and you will learn to be persistant, patient, and consistant. Your dog will come to understand that the rules are always the same and she will appreciate that you let her know when she does something right. if your dog is older you will probably have to reverse some old habits. You need to become aware of what your dog does before relieveing herself. You have to do your homework and watch for the patterns and signals. When you see them let the take the dog out or to the place she should use. When the dog goes in the new place praise and reward her. It is that simple. Of course puppy potty training is a little easier since there is no behavior to unlearn.

As this process was getting the dog potty trianed I found an unexpected benefit. The positive reinforcement methods being used were becoming a part of my, a part of the way I acted in the world. Train the trainer as they say, as the dog was trained so was I. My relationships are working better, I find myself using positive reinforcement and patience with the people around me and they are responding. Not only are they more cooperative but they tell me of the nice transformation that I am going through. They don’t realize that the dog trainging has become second nature to me and that I am using it with them but that is what is happening. It’s true, dog potty training has changed me in a most unexpected but wonderful way.

The Key to Preventing a Poorly Trained Dog

One of the main reasons for an unhappy dog owner is a poorly trained dog. Having an unruly dog can be a serious nuisance and be very destructive on its environment and the relationship between the dog and its owner.

So what is the key to preventing a poorly trained dog?

Simple, just start training them as puppies. Puppies don’t know the difference and if you make the training fun they will be more responsive as well. Conversely, if you start them when they are older they have grown into bad habits and the training will stress both you and the dog out. Not to mention the fact that the dog will be a lot more difficult to control.

If you start your dog late (particularly with leash training), they will control you. You often see people being taken for a walk by their dog as they are pulling their owners around the block. And what inevitably happens is that the owner will reprimand the dog by shouting and yanking at the leash. This isn’t fair to the dog since the reason they behave this way is because you allowed them to pull on the leash as puppies (or because of no leash training whatsoever…)

When leash training your dog, be sure to never allow for them to pull on the leash. Gently tug the leash if they start to pull and get eye contact with the puppy while you repeat their name. Also be sure to give them positive reinforcements.

The best thing to do when starting out with leash training is to allow the dog to get used to the feeling of having a collar and a leash attached. Another thing to keep in mind is to initially do the training in a familiar environment.

This reduces stress on the puppy and allows for minimum distractions. Puppies are quick to learn and you can introduce them to new lessons relatively quickly.

Once your puppy has become comfortable with the basics of leash training and knows some of the basic cues and commands like sit and heel, start taking them to the park and different areas to practice. Again, start by introducing them to a little bit of distraction, then increase the amount of distractions present while going over the same training that you exposed them to with no distractions.

Just remember that it is very important that you socialize your dog. This is often a neglected part of a dog’s training and causes dogs to become shy and/or fear aggressive. So, be sure to take your puppy to the park and other busy areas to interact with other people and dogs too!

Although this may seem like a lot of work, it is well worth the effort, as you will have a very well trained dog at the end of it all.
